Plum Island Wind Park

Winergy’s initial project is the Plum Island Wind Park, a proposed small-scale research, development and demonstration project to be located in the waters just beyond the northeastern tip of the North Fork of Long Island, in New York State waters. This project will provide the necessary proving ground for a new technology that will enable Winergy to locate future offshore wind energy parks at considerably greater distances from land than is currently possible. In addition, this project will allow scientists, educators, government officials, regulators and others to see modern offshore wind turbines in operation.

Winergy Power is evaluating a series of sites for the deployment of offshore wind farms along the eastern seaboard of the U.S. Each of the projects will generate significant amounts of clean and renewable electricity.

In 2005 Congress granted the authority for regulating development of the Outer Continental Shelf to Minerals Management Services. The Energy Policy Act of 2005 specified that MMS be the lead agency for permitting renewable energy development on the Outer Shelf. After guidelines are defined, MMS will be seeking public comment on the new rules early in 2008. The rules are to be finalized in summer of 2009.
